WORKSHOP

Ever wondered what felt is and how it is created?

Canberra Region Feltmakers offers workshops introducing those new to wet felting to the basic skills needed to start creating your own beautiful felt pieces.

In Basics and Beyond your tutor will guide you through techniques for laying out wool, wetting down, rolling, fulling, and most importantly, how to tell when your felt is fully felted. You will also explore a range of felting techniques to embellish (aka decorate) your flat felt.

After introducing you to the basic skills of felt making, your tutor will assist you to create a unique project to take home.

This workshop is run over two half days (attend both sessions).

We look forward to sharing the magic of felt making with you.

Lynn has been a feltmaker for 20 years. What she loves most about felt making is that it is a very forgiving art form and often surprises her with unexpected results.

Lynn has worked with a wide range of people to help them discover the joys of felt making: from classes with school groups, seminars at conferences, workshops for CraftACT and leading community felting projects to create large scale works.

Tutor – Bernadette Sheahan

Bernadette grew up in a sheep farming community and loves all things wool. A keen knitter she was introduced to felting over a decade ago. The felting process connects her to the origins of wool and sheep. Bernadette is an active member of Canberra Region Feltmakers, having held numerous committee positions. A keen learner and supporter Bernadette participates in many felting

Chooks Materials List

50 grams of merino wool in several colours, including some black and white, this is to make your colourful prefelts

Prefelts: small amounts of red and orange

Premade prefelts and silk hankies to use for decoration

Small amounts of knitting wool for decoration (ensure it is not machine washable) as it needs to be able to felt into the wool.

2 small buttons will be needed (for the eyes), once your chook is felted

Felting materials

Fitting Pants (4 Jul 2026)

two day WORKSHOP

This workshop is suitable for advanced beginners and above. You should have made an item of clothing before and be confident using your sewing machine.

In the workshop we will be focussing on customising a commercial pattern (not jeans). You will learn basic techniques to help you get a good fit and give you confidence in making your own pants.

FABRIC

The workshop is intended for woven fabrics only. Fabric with a little mechanical stretch or with a small percentage of lycra/elastane/spandex is also suitable.

WHICH PATTERN

Choosing the right pattern is key to getting the most from the workshop. Some investment of time to find the right pattern will be worthwhile. Included is a list of suggested pattern companies and specific patterns to help you. When selecting your size, ignore the size number and choose by your measurements (waist and hip [about 20 centimetres below your waist]). Most patterns include a range of sizes.

The choice of pant style is yours, but it is suggested that you choose a style that you wear most frequently.

Many patterns are available in both paper and pdf format. If you need help in having a pdf pattern printed please contact the tutor (0403243787). She has her patterns printed at Weft and Warp in Phillip.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM

On the first day you will be tracing your pattern, constructing a toile (a prototype) and making adjustments to the pattern.

On the second day you will construct the garment in your chosen fabric.

PATTERN COMPANIES AND PATTERN SUGGESTIONS

Tessuti - Demi, Sammy, Jensen, Robbie, Chiara, Tamiko

Pattern Emporium - Making Moves, Coco, Vacation Vibes, Harem

Stylearc - lots of different styles, but the instructions are scant.

Sew Liberated - Chanterelle

The Foldline is a UK based online pattern shop with literally thousands of patterns.

Your tutor is happy to help you with pattern and fabric selection.

TUTOR

Helen Cox is your tutor for this workshop. Helen is an accomplished sewist and has been sewing most of her life. She loves making her own clothes and often alters patterns to make new designs or to achieve better fit. She has an extensive knowledge of sewing techniques and a good eye for great patterns. She enjoys working with those who want to make their own wardrobe.
