Our Workshops and skill shares

Our workshops generally run for one or two days, which allows for extended development of skills and work on larger projects.

Skill shares are shorter events for members led by our members and focused on a particular technique or topic. Information is shared, questions are answered and we all learn from each other.

We keep our groups small to allow everyone to have some personal attention from the tutor. Our tutors are experienced felt makers from the local region as well as visiting tutors from other parts of Australia and the world.

Places can fill fast so don't delay booking.

     WORKSHOP

Light up the room with your own felt lampshade!

Wool, paper, and ink together produce a unique and inspiring marked textile that illuminates more beautifully than other combinations. Paper adds unique textural and sculptural qualities to the felt, which we emphasize with bold ink work added to our final felt forms. In this class we cover resist work, paper selection and sources, and ink for felt design. Our main project will be a cylindrical table lamp.

We’ll also explore a small sculptural lighting project. Lighting hardware - sources, bases and construction will be covered during the course. For beginning to intermediate feltmakers. Knowledge of basic feltmaking and a curiosity in exploring new materials is essential!

    YOUR TUTOR: Fiona Duthie (Canada)

Fiona Duthie is an artist/maker recognized for her dynamic surface design. She explores personal narrative using mainly textiles, focusing on relationships between people and place, and our psychological states and responses. She starts a new piece with the story and creates tactile metaphors in form, material, and process to best communicate that narrative. Fiona first encountered feltmaking in 1996 and it immediately became her medium and passion. She has a full-time studio practice based on Salt Spring Island, BC, and has exhibited her work in Canada, the USA, New Zealand, the UK and Australia.
