WORKSHOP
Let's make a hat!
Work with experienced milliner and felter Robyn Toohey to make a cloche, beret or a trilby style felt hat.
During the workshop you will learn how to:
- lay out a felt hood on a resist
- add surface embellishments (if you wish to bring some)
- felt the hood and finish the edges well
- block the felt to create the hat shape of your choice
Please give some thought to which style of hat you would like to make. Members can borrow hat blocks from the CRF Library at the June General Meeting.
At the end of the workshop you will have a hat that you can decorate at home after it has dried. Decorations might include brooches, feathers, ribbons and flowers. CRF runs activities and workshops from time to time where you can learn to make these things.
YOUR TUTOR: Robyn Toohey
Robyn studied millinery at CIT and has a Certificate 3 in Millinery and has attended many International Millinery Forums that were held in Wagga Wagga, attending workshops with International and Australian milliners.
She has been designing bespoke millinery since 2007 using quality millinery fabrics and commercially made felt hoods. One of her millinery designs won Fashions on the Field at Queanbeyan Races and another was a finalist in the Canberra Black Opal Fashions on the Field.
Robyn joined the Canberra Region Feltmakers (CRF) in 2011 as she wanted to make her own felt hoods, giving her flexibility over the choice of fleece, colour and design. She has attended many felting workshops through CRF, learning new techniques with both International and local tutors. She has experience in felting with merino and alpaca fleece.
