Sculptural Vases and Complex Resists

 WORKSHOP 

In this workshop you will find out how to make and use book resists to create unique felted vessels.

Learn how to design a complex book resist. This will be used to make a complex, sculptural vase using wet felting techniques.

This workshop introduces techniques that you can use to create 3D forms ranging from useful objects to innovative sculptural forms. You are only limited by your imagination.

Topics include:

  • Developing a plan to create a unique masterpiece
  • Equipment required
  • Designing basic and complex resists
  • Choice of fibre
  • Laying down fibre on complex book resists
  • Pre felt stage and problem solving
  • Fulling and shaping a sculptural form
  • Finishing your masterpiece

Skill level

Intermediate to experienced felters. Knowledge of basic wet felting techniques is assumed.

Tutor

Juliana Knight is a mixed media artist with a passion for felting. She has won many Champion awards at shows in a range of sections including Felting. She has had her work featured in several magazines and currently teaches and demonstrates at shows and exhibitions.

Juliana has a Diploma of Teaching in Adult Education and has been teaching people of all ages for over 25 years. Find out more about Juliana’s work at bywongartandcraft.com.au

Requirements list

Materials and equipment

  • Piece of wooden or plastic dowel 450mm long x 15mm diameter (needs to be narrow).
  • Old towel
  • Ice-cream container or small bucket
  • 2 x pieces of thin foam carpet underlay 450mm x 450mm (no bubblewrap)
  • Spray bottle (indoor plant spray bottle is ideal, no ball brausers please)
  • Olive oil soap and dish soap (not coloured)
  • 300g wool roving 18.5 – 19.5 micron (colour/s of your choice)
  • Sponge for mopping excess water
  • Fly screen netting or tulle 450mm x 450mm
  • Bamboo sushi mat
  • Soft plastic grocery bag
  • 4 x clear large plastic food storage bags OR 2 x medium garbage storage bags
  • Scissors
  • Notebook and pen
A book resist will be pre-made for you. It is yours to use and take home.
