Canberra Region Feltmakers offers one day workshops introducing those new to wet felting to the basic skills needed to start creating your own beautiful felt pieces.
In Basics and Beyond your tutor will guide you through techniques for laying out wool, wetting down, rolling, fulling, and most importantly, how to tell when your felt is fully felted. You will also explore a range of felting techniques to embellish (aka decorate) your flat felt.
After introducing you to the basic skills of felt making, your tutor will assist you to create a unique project to take home.

Lynn has been a feltmaker for 20 years. What she loves most about felt making is that it is a very forgiving art form and often surprises her with unexpected results.
Lynn has worked with a wide range of people to help them discover the joys of felt making: from classes with school groups, seminars at conferences, workshops for CraftACT and leading community felting projects to create large scale works.
Her current interests include exploring how felt making can intersect with other art forms to communicate ideas and connect communities. Her latest multi-arts project 'Small Blessings' held at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre (TAC) involved a great deal of community engagement whilst making felt. Her next community project to hit the streets, 'Words In The Wind' (supported by TAC), features the creative use of textiles to explore and communicate ideas about place.

Note: this is a sewing workshop and not a felting workshop.
This workshop is designed to help you gain confidence in choosing and sewing with patterns. You will also learn how to use just a few patterns to make many different garments with a variety of fabrics. You will learn how to determine the correct size, how to make simple alterations to your pattern and how to fix fitting problems while constructing the garment, and how to assess the pattern information more critically to determine if it will give you the result you want.
Helen will also discuss how the world of sewing patterns has changed dramatically over the past few years. This will include how to download, print and use pdf patterns.
Over the two days you will construct at least one garment and, time permitting, make progress on another.
You will need to use a pattern that is suitable for felt. Helen suggests a simple cardigan/jacket/vest style such as a kimono style or pullover vest. These patterns are normally suitable for use with felt, boiled wool and similar fabrics but can also work in lighter fabrics.

In addition to being a keen felter, Helen has sewn for almost her entire life and has made many of her own clothing since she was 12. She loves to make one of a kind wearables from her felt. She is always searching for patterns suitable for felt clothing and will share her experience with patterns in the workshop.

In nature we can find a variety of interesting shells, pods and capsules, a rich source of inspiration for hollow felted forms. We can learn a lot from them in terms of architecture and stability, important features in felt making too.
In this workshop you will experiment with an organic hollow form, like a sea anemone.
The small size of the object requires a very fine and precise layout. This will make us aware of the essential details in handling our materials. You will notice how fibre combination and their direction, as well as the amounts of wool applied to different sections, influence the final shape from the very beginning of the felting process.
Often, you can change the character of the final felt object by modifying small details only in the initial setting, and achieve a variety of interesting forms, even starting with the same, relatively simple resist!
You can look forward to a playful, experimental 1-day-workshop and expect to make 1 or even a little "family" of objects, depending on your personal pace and felting experience.
Born in Jena, Germany, Dagmar Binder has always been fascinated by art especially drawing, painting and sculpture, design and most of all textiles. While studying fine art she discovered the versatility and sculptural potential of wool and how coloured fibres can be blended in painterly ways. Skill Level
Some previous felting experience is helpful, but beginners can also try their hand at it!
In this workshop we will add 3-dimensional elements to a basic collar.
With special attention to fibre direction and combination of materials we'll create a well shaped item that perfectly fits the neck and shoulders and receives its individual character with 3d surface design.
You will practice on a smaller item, learn what to pay attention to when planning a garment, experiment with different forms and discover possibilities for other wearable items.
The necessary amount may vary, depending on size and amount of details. For a collar of 110 cm length:
